چکیده

ABSTRACT We present a high-resolution seawater radiocarbon (Δ 14 C) record from Porites coral collected Masthead Island in the southern Great Barrier Reef (GBR) covering years 1945–2017. The Δ C values 1945–1953 (pre-bomb era) averaged –49‰. As result of bomb-produced atmosphere, started to rise rapidly 1959, levelled off at ∼131‰ late 1970s and gradually decreased ∼40.3‰ by 2017 due decrease air-sea gradient overturning ocean reservoir (i.e., surface subsurface ocean; atmosphere ocean). is agreement with previous records GBR. A comparison between atmospheric suggests that, since 2010, main bomb-derived has shifted ocean, potentially resulting reversed flux regions where CO 2 favorable. sheds light on long-term variability exchange GBR regional dynamics associated climate change conjunction provides robust reference series date other carbonate samples.

Recovery from disturbance of coral and reef fish communities on the Great Barrier Reef, Australia

Coral reefs are consistently and increasingly subject to acute disturbance events that often lead to a reduction in live coral cover with concomitant effects on the diversity and abundance of coral reef fishes. Here we examine changes in both hard coral and reef-fish assemblages over 15 yr following major losses of coral from exposed reefs in 2 widely separated sectors of the Great Barrier Reef...

Declining coral calcification on the Great Barrier Reef.

Reef-building corals are under increasing physiological stress from a changing climate and ocean absorption of increasing atmospheric carbon dioxide. We investigated 328 colonies of massive Porites corals from 69 reefs of the Great Barrier Reef (GBR) in Australia. Their skeletal records show that throughout the GBR, calcification has declined by 14.2% since 1990, predominantly because extension...

The exposure of the Great Barrier Reef to ocean acidification.

The Great Barrier Reef (GBR) is founded on reef-building corals. Corals build their exoskeleton with aragonite, but ocean acidification is lowering the aragonite saturation state of seawater (Ωa). The downscaling of ocean acidification projections from global to GBR scales requires the set of regional drivers controlling Ωa to be resolved. Here we use a regional coupled circulation-biogeochemic...

Coral Reef Community Composition in the Context of Disturbance History on the Great Barrier Reef, Australia

Much research on coral reefs has documented differential declines in coral and associated organisms. In order to contextualise this general degradation, research on community composition is necessary in the context of varied disturbance histories and the biological processes and physical features thought to retard or promote recovery. We conducted a spatial assessment of coral reef communities ...

Atsr Maps Coral Bleaching on Australia’s Great Barrier Reef

The Australian Great Barrier Reef (GBR) experienced its most intensive and extensive coral bleaching event on record in early 1998 [1]. This period also saw extensive damage to other reefs around the globe. There is concern among environmental scientists and GBR-based industries, especially tourism, that widespread death and bleaching of corals caused by extremely high temperatures during 1997-...
